Cathay Pacific Airways today launched its latest Sustainable Development Report outlining the various sustainability measures undertaken by the airline in 2010. The report incorporates the Cathay Pacific Group’s 100%-owned subsidiaries based in Hong Kong -Dragonair, Cathay Pacific Catering Services, Hong Kong Airport Services, Vogue Laundry Services and Cathay Pacific Holidays – and for the first time includes data on 60%-owned Air Hong Kong.
For the third consecutive year the report achieved an A+ rating - the highest possible - in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, an externally verified and internationally accepted benchmark for reporting on economic, environmental and social impacts.
The report has in-depth coverage of the Group’s economic, social and environmental performance in 2010, a year which saw a number of achievements and initiatives that moved the company closer towards its goal of achieving sustainable aviation. The theme of the report - “Our Shared Journey” – conveys the value Cathay Pacific places on its stakeholders, and highlights the airline’s commitment to engage with and respond to stakeholders’ opinions in an accountable and transparent way.
Cathay Pacific Director Corporate Affairs Quince Chong said: “Aviation contributes significantly to society and the world economy. While we continue to increase these benefits and provide the best possible services to our customers, we are at the same time committed to continually seek effective and appropriate solutions to mitigate our environmental impact. Our efforts in 2010 are illustrated in the latest Sustainable Development Report.”
The report contains messages from Cathay Pacific Chairman Christopher Pratt and recently appointed Chief Executive John Slosar, which recognise that sustainability not only aligns with Cathay Pacific’s core values but will also help the airline become more competitive, efficient and innovative.
In 2010, Cathay Pacific made commitments to major investments in new, more fuel-efficient aircraft which took into account the goal of moving towards lower-carbon operations. Incidents in 2010 highlighted the importance of ensuring safety as the first priority as part of the sustainable development agenda. The report also demonstrates how the company strives to be an employer of choice and invests in the communities in which it operates around the world.
