Manchester Airport has spent $15m to upgrade its facilities to accommodate Emirate Airline’s A380 superjumbo, the managing director of the British airport said on Wednesday.

"The start of daily A380 services from Manchester to Dubai is a moment in history for our airport and the wider region. We've invested around £10m ($15m) to upgrade the airport's infrastructure to accommodate the flagship of the Emirates fleet,” Manchester Airport's managing director Andrew Cornish said as the aircraft made its first landing in the airport on Wednesday.

The Dubai-based carrier is the world's largest operator of the A380 and has twelve aircraft in its fleet. In June, it announced at the Berlin Air Show that it had ordered a further 32 from Airbus.

Maurice Flanagan, executive vice chairman of Emirates Airline and Group said that “as a result of our announcement in Berlin, we have had enquiries from more than twenty airports across the world, asking whether Emirates would fly the A380 to their airports.”
He added that the aircraft has proved popular with passengers and was currently running a load factor of over 90 percent.
